Culture, art and society in the 20th century
In the 20th century, culture emerged as a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of human phenomena that cannot be attributed to genetic inheritance. Specifically, the term "culture" in American anthropology had two meanings: the evolved human capacity to classify and represent experiences with symbols, and to act imaginatively and creatively; and the distinct ways that people living in different parts of the world classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively. Hoebel describes culture as an integrated system of learned behavior patterns which are characteristic of the members of a society and which are not a result of biological inheritance.

As the century began movies, music and the media had a major influence on fashion and trends in all aspects of life. As many movies and much music originate from the United States, American culture sread rapidly over the world. Computer games, internet surfing, literature (science fiction and fantasy) and modern dance became new and popular form of entertainment.
Visual culture became more dominant not only in movies but in comics and television as well.
